Acts of Kindness

Winston Churchill famously said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

Random acts of kindness are a means by which we make a deliberate attempt to brighten another person’s day by doing something thoughtful, nice, and caring. One small, thoughtful gesture can make someone else’s day. Not only could you make someone else’s day but you are guaranteed to be happier yourself. The benefits of charity and kindness are powerful. You’ve seen it in the grocery store when someone offers to let someone go before them and not have to wait: The generous person feels noble, the other person beams with gratitude, and even spectators feel like cheering inside just from having witnessed a simple act of kindness. As it turns out, the effects of those experiences aren’t just psychological. Those who study the science of kindness have discovered that performing a good deed has major physiological benefits — for the giver, not just the recipient.

We should seek out an opportunity to help every day. Hold open a door, offer assistance, help someone trying to get a stroller down the steps or take any small acts of kindness. Every small interaction with someone is an opportunity to have a positive impact on both of your lives. When you look, you’ll find opportunities to perform acts of kindness. When you take those opportunities to perform random acts of kindness, you’ll feel great.
